my music

2016 was the best year for music in my lifetime.  The rest of the year can take a hike but the music was top notch.   I bought more new releases in 2016 than ever before and I am still buying albums released in 2016 today.  It’s become something of a project.

I know it’s weird.

So in order to convince you that 2016 was indeed a vintage year for music, here are my favourite albums from everyone’s least favourite year and if you know of any 2016 gems that I’ve missed please do tell me and if I like them I will buy them and add them to the page.

Sadie from Speedy Ortiz’s big pop album.

Thao & The Get Down Stay Down A Man Alive

Merrill Garbus produced this innovative album full of hooks.

Ty Segall Emotional Mugger

“Guitars sliced with scribble”.

ROAR Impossible Animals

Simultaneously nostalgic and modern. Experimenting with a 60s sound.

Lizzo Coconut Oil

Positive, fun, feel-good party music.

Matmos Ultimate Care II

Every sound was made using their washing machine. One 38 minute track (the length of a single wash cycle).

Gallant Ology

Evolved R&B album without any obvious arrangements.

Swans The Glowing Man

The final part of a musical trilogy.

Marching Church Telling It Like It Is

Danish Brit-Pop Soul with a front cover so bad it’s good.

Adam Torres Pearls To Swine

A very special folk album. His voice is like nothing else.

Noura Mint Seymali Arbina

Amazing vocalist from Mauritania.

Deerhoof The Magic

A more conventional album for Deerhoof but still quirky as ever.

Law Holt City

Experimental electro with distinctive vocals.

John Cale M:FANS

He’s essentially covered his own album from 1982. Completely different versions of the same songs. Love it.

Katie Dey Flood Network

Electronic noisescapes and acoustic guitar with melodies snuck in.

Deftones Gore

The guitarist himself slagged this off before it came out but, like a lot of people, I really like it.

HDBeenDope PHeace Be The Journey

Classy.

Xylaroo Sweetooth

Clean acoustic pop.

JJ Doll JJ Doll

Hardcore punk band featuring members of Ivy.

One of the songs has Craig David on it and even that song is really cool.

Mourn Ha, Ha, He.

Smart and catchy post punk from Spain.

Psych rock from Austin, Texas. So many puns in the tracklisting.

Kate Jackson British Road Movies

Singer songwriter with a bit of an 80s feel.

Old Man Saxon The Perils

Short hip hop EP. Breakfast is such a good track.

Wreck And Reference Indifferent Rivers Romance End

Experimental synth metal.

Leapling Suspended Animation

Subtle melodic indie rock.

Bitchin Bajas & Bonnie “Prince” Billy Epic Jammers And Fortunate Ditties

The title tells you all you need to know. All the titles are lifted from fortune cookies.

Gonjasufi Callus

Heard this get negatively described as “demos – the album” but that’s exactly what I like about it. Great unconventional songwriting.

Iglooghost Little Grids

EP, three new tracks and a couple of remixes.

Skepta Konnichiwa

Mercury Prize winning grime album.

Underworld Barbara Barbara, We Face A Shining Future

Another of my favourite album titles of the year. Never owned an album by them before!

Experimental electronic music but also great songs with great vocal melodies.

Kefaya Radio International

Recorded during travels and collaborations with musicians across India, Spain, Palestine, Italy and the UK.

Half Japanese Perfect
